Marshall (9-4, 7-1 C-USA) has officially accepted an invitation to play in the 2013 Military Bowl, the bowl announced Saturday afternoon.

The announcement came shortly after the Thundering Herd lost, 41-24, to Rice in the Conference USA championship game.

The Military Bowl has long been the likely destination for coach Randy Edsall and Maryland, as well, after the Terrapins won two of their final three games and finished 7-4 in the regular season. The definitive destination as to where Maryland will play should come Sunday, one day after the ACC championship game has been played.

If Maryland does indeed end up facing Marshall in the Military Bowl, they will be facing an electric offense led by junior quarterback Rakeem Cato. Cato finished the regular season with 3314 yards passing and 34 touchdowns through the air while throwing eight interceptions.

Cato also added six touchdowns on the ground.

This Marshall team first flashed on the national radar in late September when the Thundering Herd pushing Virginia Tech to three overtimes in Blacksburg before ultimately losing, 29-21.

In that game, running back Essray Taliaferro aided Marshall’s offense with 105 yards on the ground. He finished the regular season with 1006 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.

Marshall offense ranks eighth in the country, scoring 43.0 points per game. Its defense has been above average, holding opponents to 23.2 points per game.
