Gusts reaching 80 mph and unpredictable currents are to blame for killing seven swimmers in the south of France on Sunday.

At least three other people were listed in “serious condition” Sunday evening, the Daily Mail reported.

“Conditions were hugely treacherous, yet many people did not seem aware of this,” said a spokesman for the local lifeguards, in the Daily Mail report.

“People have been venturing into the sea and never returning,” said a spokesman for the emergency services in Vendres. “We get bad days every summer, but what happened today is absolutely exceptional. It has been a terrible day.”

The spokesman added that dozens of successful rescues were carried out Sunday.
