A 6-month-old Chicago girl died Tuesday after being shot five times while her father was changing her diaper.

Jonylah Watkins died at Comer Children’s Hospital after being shot in the thigh, shoulder, lung, liver and bowels, Fox News reports. Her father, Jonathan Watkins, is in critical condition after being shot in the side and buttocks.

According to witnesses, Mr. Watkins was standing beside his minivan and changing his daughter’s diaper, when a gunman approached and opened fire on them around 1 p.m. in an apparent gang-related attack.

The family has been victim to previous gun-related attacks. Jonylah’s mother, Judy Watkins, was shot in the knee when she was pregnant.

Police are investigating the incident, but Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said “there are very strong gang overtones to this event,” My Fox Chicago reports.

The father has an extensive criminal history with over 30 previous arrests.
