Teachers at a school in rural Oregon were shocked last Friday when two masked men burst into a meeting and pretended to open fire.

The drill was designed to test Pine Eagle Charter School’s preparation for an assault by “active shooters” who were, in reality, members of the school staff shooting blanks, the Oregonian reports.

Students at Pine Eagle Charter School had the day off for an “in-service day,” but staff members said they were pretty jarred by the event.

Principal Cammie DeCastro said it became clear very quickly that “not many” would have survived the attack, had it been real.

Elementary teacher Morgan Gover, 31, said only two teachers would have lived to tell the tale.

“I’ll tell you, the whole situation was horrible,” she told the Oregonian. “I got a couple in the front and a couple in the back.”

The surprised staff had received training from the Union County Sheriff’s Office on active shooter scenarios prior to the drill.

Parents have expressed some concern over the drills, but most of the school’s staff members think they are invaluable.

“I’m in charge of a pile of kids,” Ms. Gover said. “It made me analyze as a teacher what my role is for these babies.”

The Oregonian reports that the district’s Safety Committee and the School Board will critically evaluate if the drill was effective and decide what to do next.

Ms. Gover said the teachers are in favor of having one or two armed teachers in the building at all times.

“We are so remote,” she said. “We are going to have to take care of ourselves.”
