Prisons in the United Kingdom were on high alert Wednesday following an inmate-initiated hostage situation that is being linked to radical Islam.

An email distributed to officials at high-security prisons in the nation warned that a recent Full Sutton prison hostage and attack situation was tied to “radical Islamist extremism,” The Associated Press reported. Her Majesty’s Prison Full Sutton is located in Yorkshire, in northern England. The email sent prisons around the United Kingdom on high alert, given especially the extremist Muslim machete street attack of a British soldier last week.

The incident at Full Sutton took place Sunday, Ynet News reported. Then, three Muslim inmates held an officer hostage in his office and injured two others while making their demands known. The specifics of their demands have not been made public, but the email warned: “All staff are reminded to remain vigilant to the increased risk of potential attacks on prison officers inspired by these … events,” AP reported.

Britain’s Ministry of Justice declined to comment on the email on Wednesday, AP said, but its existence and warning were reported widely in the British press.
