The mayor of one New Jersey boardwalk town says he’s sick and tired of the complaints and wants city officials to ban improper public dress, such as pants that sag below waists.
People who “walk around with their butts hanging out” are causing headaches, Wildwood Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. said in an Associated Press report. A proposed ordinance would mandate that the waistbands on pants, shorts, swimsuits and skirts hang no lower than 3 inches below natural waistlines and completely cover skin and underwear, AP said.
The ordinance also would require boardwalk walkers to wear shoes and — between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. — shirts, AP reported.
The new rules are aimed at keeping the boardwalk family-friendly, the mayor said. But how those rules would be implemented — whether a special task force of ruler-wielding measurers would patrol the boardwalk, for instance — is still unclear, as well as what would happen to violators.
