Miami Herald reporter Jim Wyss arrived in Miami from Caracas on Sunday morning after he was detained for nearly 48 hours by Venezuelan authorities.

He was released from a detention facility Saturday to U.S. Embassy officials in Caracas, the newspaper announced.

“A sincere thanks to everyone who helped win my speedy release and to the Venezuelan authorities who made it possible,” Mr. Wyss tweeted soon after his release.

The reporter was detained Thursday evening while covering Venezuela’s upcoming municipal elections in the Andean city of San Cristobal, Tachira. Authorities said Mr. Wyss did not have permission to report in the country.

Mr. Wyss said he was flown Friday evening to the detention center in Caracas, where he was visited by a U.S. Embassy official, the Herald reported.

“We’re relieved and glad Jim is home safe and sound,” said Aminda Marques Gonzalez, the Herald’s executive editor.
