LAUREL, Md. (AP) — Howard County police say a man wanted in the shooting of an officer is in custody.

Police say 29-year-old Stephon Prather surrendered to police officers who spotted him walking along Route 1 in Laurel on Thursday morning. He was wanted on attempted murder and assault charges after the shooting Wednesday, and police say he had a gunshot wound to the leg.

After receiving a report from a business of a man with a gun, police say three officers confronted a man, who started firing. Police say 30-year-old Officer Steven Houk was hit and officers returned fire, but the man fled and officers searched the area overnight.

Police say Houk is in serious condition at Shock Trauma in Baltimore, but is talking and alert
