All the talk about Republican infighting misses the point (“Halting Republican infighting,” Commentary, Oct. 29). If you want to solve a problem, you must first define it.

I submit that the problem is better defined as that of an out-of-touch Washington establishment having received power and wealth to a degree unhealthy for the longevity of our republic. I would submit that the GOP’s problem is a lack of leadership of the kind and degree manifested at the time of the 1994 elections.

A lack of clear direction is what ails the party in the context of a general breakdown of our constitutional republic and of the rule of law.
