Police are asking for any information that could lead them to the person responsible for stealing a bell dedicated to those who died in Connecticut’s Sandy Hook school massacre from a newly built playground in New York’s Nassau County.

The 8-by-8-inch brass bell was last seen around 9 p.m. Saturday at a playground in Island Park, The Associated Press reported.

The bell was discovered missing Sunday afternoon after organizers spent all weekend constructing the playground. It is one of 26 in the region dedicated to the 20 children and six educators killed in December, the report said.

The bell’s inscription says, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.”

Detectives ask anyone with information to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800/244-TIPS.
