PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The state-run health insurance marketplace saw a last-minute surge that pushed sign-ups for private health coverage in Rhode Island during the first enrollment period to nearly 28,000.

HealthSource RI spokeswoman Dara Chadwick said Tuesday the preliminary total of private-plan enrollments since Oct. 1 is 27,968. That doesn’t include Medicaid sign-ups, which numbered 48,602 as of March 8.

Monday was the final day to sign up, though people who tried to enroll and encountered system issues may be eligible for an extension.

Chadwick said HealthSource RI’s two walk-in locations had 600 visits Monday, and there were more than 6,000 calls. The day’s enrollment reached 1,840.

Most Americans are required to have insurance under the federal health care overhaul, or face a fine. Open enrollment will be held again in the fall.
