MANISTEE, Mich. (AP) - A Detroit-area man has been charged with poaching a black bear last fall in northern Michigan.

The Department of Natural Resources says James May of Macomb County’s Clinton Township called authorities after they asked the public for information about the Nov. 16 incident in Manistee County.

The 33-year-old May is charged with killing a bear without a permit and excessive use of bait. The bear was left to die in the woods, and three bear cubs disappeared.

A message seeking comment was left with May’s attorney, Jane Johnson.

If convicted, May faces up to 90 days in jail. He’s next due in court on April 9.
