Man wanted in Jacksonville shooting shot, wounded by law officers

LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. (AP) - A man wanted in a Jacksonville shooting is in critical condition after being shot by law officers near Lake Waccamaw west of Wilmington.

Columbus County District Attorney Jon David says 60-year-old George Reynold Evans of Jacksonville was wounded Sunday.

Officials said Evans faced an attempted murder charge after his estranged wife was shot Saturday outside a restaurant.

Authorities say officers tried to stop a vehicle on U.S. 701 on the South Carolina side of the state line Sunday but the driver refused to stop and sped off. Following a high-speed chase, the vehicle stopped on the median of U.S. 74-76 in North Carolina. Authorities say a suspect showed a gun and was shot several times by sheriff’s deputies and Highway Patrol troopers.

The officers involved are on administrative leave pending an investigation.
