DENVER (AP) - The coroner has identified the man aboard who was killed when a small plane crashed in an empty field near a shopping center south of Denver over the weekend.

In a statement Tuesday, the Douglas County coroner’s office said the victim was 60-year-old James Peoples of Littleton. The manner of death was determined to be an accident.

Peoples was the only person aboard the plane, which had been identified as a Sonerai, a type of aircraft hobbyists build in their own workshops. No injuries on the ground were reported.

The crash came minutes after the pilot was in touch with the Centennial Airport tower as he took off Saturday afternoon.

The National Transportation and Safety Board is leading the investigation.
