WAURIKA, Okla. (AP) - Waurika is gearing up for its annual festival honoring the rattlesnake.

The 53rd Fangtastic Waurika Rattlesnake Hunt weekend begins Friday and runs through Sunday. The annual event highlights the rattlesnake and also raises money for the town’s volunteer fire department.

The fire department is buying snakes that will be deep-fried and sold to adventurous eaters. Firefighter Steven Dyer tells the Duncan Banner (https://bit.ly/1hG9Pbi ) that the department has already bought 5,000 pounds of snakes for the festival.

The festival also features snake hunts, a “snake sacking” competition and the crowning of the 2014 Fangtastic Snake Hunt Queens and Kings.
