FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A convicted felon has been sentenced to life in prison for attacking a man with a machete in Flagstaff.

Coconino County prosecutors say 29-year-old Luis Leyvas Sanchez was convicted in February on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The December 2012 attack left the victim with an 8-inch gash on the right side of his head as well as slash wounds on his neck, back and legs.

Prosecutors say Sanchez had two prior armed robbery convictions.

They say a state statute imposes a mandatory life sentence for anyone convicted of three serious offenses.

At the sentencing hearing Friday, the Arizona Daily Sun reports (https://bit.ly/Qf5FRY ) that Superior Court Judge Mark Moran Moran called Sanchez “a dangerous person” who belongs in prison and the life sentence is appropriate.
