BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) - A Bristol business owner was critically injured when his dragster went airborne and crashed into a restaurant meat smoking shed.

Witnesses told WJAR-TV (https://bit.ly/1hp6pPc ) that Steve Elmslie was trying out the dragster in the parking lot of his tool company Thursday afternoon when it sped across the street, went over a mound, catapulted over barrier blocks in front of the Wing-N-It restaurant and smashed into the smoking shed.

Elmslie is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

The restaurant’s owner, Charles Frizado, says the crash sounded like an explosion, and the airborne dragster just missed hitting a restaurant worker.

Bristol police are trying to determine the cause of the accident.
