SENEY, Mich. (AP) - The Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is looking for participants in a sharp-tailed grouse survey.

The survey begins Friday and runs through May 14.

“Citizen scientist” helpers will watch a video and short quiz before taking part. They hike one mile to a blind, arriving by dawn.

After taking weather readings, they observe a grouse mating ritual in which males rapidly stomp their feet, causing their tails to rattle. Females watch the action, then select a mate. The romance is fleeting, as the hen is left to raise the young on her own.

After spending an hour counting dancing and non-dancing grouse, participants are free to watch, video or photograph the birds.
