PRINEVILLE, Ore. (AP) - A boat caught fire near on the Prineville Reservoir and sank after family members jumped overboard and swam to shore.

The Crook County sheriff’s office reported the fire broke out Sunday afternoon near a boat launch when the operator tried to start the inboard motor, and the engine compartment caught fire.

Deputies said 40-year-old Anthony Howden of Bend told them he tried to use a fire extinguisher, but it didn’t work, and life jackets were not at hand, so the family bailed out without them.

Deputies said the boat was about 30 yards from shore when they arrived and then drifted toward shore before sinking.
