CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Authorities in southeastern Pennsylvania say the crash that killed a 4-year-old boy hours after he returned from his father’s funeral appears to have been a “tragic accident.”

Chester police said Monday that 4-year-old Karder Hardy died after he was struck by a passing vehicle after emerging from a car at about 5 p.m. Saturday. The driver stopped to render aid. Authorities said the child was later pronounced dead at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Police said the boy’s father, 38-year-old Derrick Brown, 38, had been killed earlier this month in a shooting a few miles away. Investigators told the Delaware County Daily Times that he may have been an innocent bystander.

Police Commissioner Joseph Ball said the accident remains under investigation but “appears to be a very, very tragic accident.”
