YATES, N.Y. (AP) - A 42-year-old western New York man who tried to back his car into a trooper but hit the officer’s car instead has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

State police pulled over Carlos Botello Jr. in the Orleans County town of Yates for driving erratically last September. As the trooper approached Botello’s car, officials say Botello put the car in reverse and tried to hit the trooper.

The trooper jumped aside and Botello hit his car, then sped off. He was caught after driving into a farmer’s cornfield.

Botello was sentenced Monday to nine years in prison and five years of supervised release. He also has to pay $1,000 to the farmer for damage to the cornfield.
