GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Department of Corrections is investigating a complaint alleging the misuse of state inmate workers who reportedly set up a tent for a wedding at the Great Southern Golf Course.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1hIH3wP ) Grace Fisher, the department’s communications director, confirmed the investigation Tuesday. She said a complaint was lodged with the department last week.

The program is an alternative for non-violent felons who are finishing their prison terms. Inmates perform free labor for cities, counties, state agencies and approved charitable organizations. Jobs include janitorial and mechanical work and picking up trash along state highways and at city and state parks.

Fisher says the crew assigned to the Harrison County Community Work Center has been suspended amid the investigation. The center is one of 17 operated by MDOC.
