COVINGTON, La. (AP) - An ordinance that would have limited skateboarding in Covington was voted down by the City Council after dozens of opponents rallied in protest of the ban. Opposition to the ordinance had been building since it was introduced by the council last month.

City officials tell The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1palYj0 ) they had received complaints from area businesses about skateboarders congregating in from of their property. And in one case, a young child was knocked to the ground by a skateboarder.

But opponents argued that people use skateboarding as both a hobby and a means of transportation.

After some council members talked about amending the ordinance to make it less restrictive, Councilman Larry Rolling moved to withdraw the ordinance. That motion was approved by a 5-2 vote on Tuesday.
