WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington’s mayor is seeking another $1.2 million to cover unexpected snow day expenses after the harsh winter.

The News Journal reports (https://delonline.us/1exPx9l ) that Mayor Dennis Williams is seeking money from a special city asset fund to cover $1 million in overtime and other expenses. Council members are scheduled to consider an amendment Thursday that requires use of money not in the current budget.

About 80 percent of the $1 million covers overtime paid to police officers, firefighters and Parks and Recreation and Public Works staff who worked while city offices were closed on snow days.

But some council members are asking why Williams spent so much on overtime. Councilman Bud Freel says the mayor could have avoided some costs by keeping the city open or opening later in the day.
