NEW YORK (AP) - New York City medical examiners have ruled that the death of a baby found in a teenager’s shopping bag was a homicide.

The baby was discovered Oct. 17 by a Victoria’s Secret security guard in Manhattan.

ME spokeswoman Julie Bolcer (BOHL’-sur) said Wednesday the cause of the baby’s death was homicidal asphyxia.

Authorities have said the girl told detectives she delivered a day earlier and didn’t know what to do with the baby.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office wouldn’t comment on whether it plans to seek upgraded charges. One of the girl’s lawyers, Earl Ward, says prosecutors hadn’t yet told him of their plans.

The girl has already been charged with shoplifting at the store. She’s maintained her innocence.

A friend who was with her pleaded guilty in December to disorderly conduct.
