MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) - Firefighters who were called to help with an electrical fire on Mackinac Island had to hop on a plane to quickly get to the scene because of Great Lakes ice.

The island’s Acting Fire Chief Jason St. Onge tells MLive.com (https://bit.ly/Qgd6Zm ) early concerns about flames spreading Wednesday from Benjamin’s Photo and Gift Shop prompted a call to the Upper Peninsula community of St. Ignace for assistance.

St. Ignace crews usually would take a boat to Mackinac Island. No injuries were reported. The shop had structural damage.

Ice mostly blocks the Straits of Mackinac, except for the shipping channel, and also is affecting ferry service. Ice-breaking work is planned this week.

Mackinac Island is located in Lake Huron between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, and is a popular destination for tourists.
