KILLDEER, N.D. (AP) - State health officials have ordered a facility in western North Dakota that handles radioactive material to cease operations immediately.

The Department of Health says it issued an emergency order Thursday to secure the Killdeer facility operated by Dyad Environmental, LLC.

The order alleges inspections earlier this month revealed various safety violations including the lack of a qualified radiation safety officer on staff.

The department says the company must cease all operations and allow state inspectors to verify compliance with the order.

The company says all compliance issues were corrected within two days of the inspection and says it invites officials to inspect the plant again.

The facility handles radioactive filter socks, a byproduct of the oil industry. The filter socks bear technologically enhanced, naturally occurring radioactive material, known as TENORM.
