SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Authorities are blaming a gunfight between two rival gangs that was occurring blocks away for the shooting death of a 2-year-old South Bend boy who was playing outside.

Court documents filed Thursday said a bullet from one of the guns used in the gunfight traveled three blocks April 9 before it struck John Swoveland Jr. in the chest while he played in the front yard of a relative’s home.

Two men, Robert L. Griffin and Tarez Buchanon, both 19, are charged with murder in the boy’s death. Griffin remained at large Thursday night. Online court records showed neither man had an attorney yet.

Prosecutors say six other men or youths also face charges in connection with the case.
