CANTON, Ohio (AP) - More then 40 people escaped and three people were transported after fire broke out at a Canton apartment building.

Local media reports indicate crews were called to the three-story brick structure at around 7:25 a.m. Saturday to find the first floor engulfed in flames and smoke.

The Canton Repository reports (https://bit.ly/1gVpUhM ) an elderly woman jumped to safety from a second-story window. Firefighters on ladders helped others leave the building.

All city units and an extra fire engine from Plain Township responded to the scene.

No serious injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.

The Repository and WEWS-TV in Cleveland report (https://bit.ly/1eLCCRt ) the American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist about 10 displaced residents.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by fire prevention inspectors.
