ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage police say a man who vanished a year ago has been found dead inside his home in the Eagle River area.

The Anchorage Daily News reports (https://is.gd/zDEOfI ) that the body of 37-year-old Samuel McAlpine was found Monday.

Police say tenants had been living in the house.

Police spokeswoman Dani Myren says McAlpine and his wife were going through a divorce around the time he disappeared. Both moved out of the house and they decided to rent it. Police say that before tenants moved in, McAlpine returned, crawling into a small space underneath a stairwell.

The spokeswoman says McAlpine’s ex-wife smelled a foul odor as she was preparing the house for new renters.

Myren says police don’t suspect foul play but say drugs or alcohol may be involved. The Alaska State Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy.
