JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - U.S. Coast Guard crews taking place in a mock drill involving a fire on a ship were instead diverted to an emergency on a boat some 50 miles off of Fernandina Beach.

Public Affairs Specialist Anthony Soto says the Coast Guard got word Wednesday morning that five people were on board a boat that was taking on water in the Atlantic.

The 70-foot Belle-Amie reported a fire on board about 8:47 a.m. The occupants extinguished the fire, and donned life jackets as the boat took on water.

Soto says two helicopters were on the scene and the 85-foot Coast Guard Cutter Diamondback was on its way to the site. He says a nearby boat, the 56-foot Tippe Canoe, was providing assistance until the Coast Guard arrived.
