DENVER (AP) - Authorities say they were pursuing a fugitive parolee from Colorado when he fatally shot his girlfriend and himself in Tulsa, Okla.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday (https://bit.ly/Oe0rVf) 36-year-old Roy Hanthorn and 32-year-old Rhiannon Vantassel were wanted on federal warrants for investigation of car theft. Colorado corrections officials say the two had also absconded from parole in February.

Tulsa police say they began pursuing the couple on Tuesday when they spotted them in a stolen car with Colorado plates. An officer tried to stop Hanthorn, who was driving, but he took off.

Authorities say Hanthorn abandoned the car they were in and stole another vehicle. Police say the chase ended when Hanthorn shot Vantassel and then himself.

It was unclear why the couple fled to Tulsa.
