NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio says he won’t seek a second term next year, citing political disputes and the personal sacrifice needed to do the job.

The Day of New London reports (https://bit.ly/1mK7G6k ) that Finizio made the surprise announcement Tuesday night during his annual budget address to the City Council. He said he plans to focus on stabilizing the city’s finances in his final 21 months in office.

The 36-year-old Democrat was elected in November 2011. He says he cannot continue to speak “uncomfortable financial truths” about city spending while rivals perceive his every move as a political maneuver to get re-elected.

Finizio says not seeking another term will put him in a stronger position to improve the city’s finances by the time his term ends in December 2015.
