PITTSBURG, Calif. (AP) - Northern California authorities say a man was killed early Wednesday when his car plunged into a canal.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District inspector Lisa Martinez said that authorities received a report Wednesday morning that a car had gone into the Contra Costa Canal in Pittsburg, Calif.

Martinez says rescuers extricated the man from the submerged car, but after attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other victims were found in the area.

The man’s name and the reason his car plunged into the canal were not immediately known.

Police are investigating the incident.
