PEARLAND, Texas (AP) - Investigators are trying to determine if a man who was acting erratically and drove off in a Houston Fire Department ambulance had been using drugs.

Police on Tuesday night chased the stolen ambulance for about 10 miles and captured the driver after forcing the emergency vehicle off the road in Pearland.

GPS helped officers track the ambulance, which originally was dispatched on a call about a man possibly needing medical attention.

Lt. Larry Crowson says it’s a dangerous situation any time you have a person acting irrational and driving a motor vehicle. Crowson also says the man spit out white chunks of what’s believed to be crack cocaine.

The suspect wasn’t hurt. His name wasn’t immediately released.

The ambulance ended up with two flat tires.
