BALD KNOB, Ark. (AP) - A prosecutor has cleared the Bald Knob police chief in a shooting that wounded a woman at a convenience store.

Prosecuting attorney Chris Raff said Chief Tim Sanford was justified in his use of force in the March 24 shooting of 34-year-old Amy Renee Collins of Cave City. According to police, Sanford was investigating a reported stabbing at the convenience store when he shot Collins after she allegedly ran toward him with a knife in her hand.

Collins was shot in the shoulder area and is in White County Medical Center in stable condition.

“I was ready to go back the day after the incident,” said Sanford, who’s been on paid administrative leave since the shooting. “That’s because I knew 100 percent that I was in the right and I had no qualms about being in the wrong. I relied on my training and some witnesses said I probably let her get too close to me.”

Police allege that Collins stabbed a man in the neck inside the convenience store, and then began slicing her neck and wrist before running out of the store. According to police, Sanford then shot Collins after she refused his orders to drop the knife.

Raff said the use of deadly force was “reasonable in (Sanford‘s) belief that such deadly force was necessary to defend himself in response to the use of deadly force by Collins, who was advancing upon Chief Sanford while armed with a knife despite his repeated requests to stop.”

The man who was stabbed is also in stable condition at White County Medical Center. Raff said he will file first-degree battery and aggravated assault charges against Collins for the stabbing, The Daily Citizen reported (https://bit.ly/1hzVnGg ) Wednesday. Authorities said they did not know if she had an attorney.
