NEW YORK (AP) - Traffic is backed up for miles on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway after an overnight two-vehicle accident.

Fire officials say one person was taken to a hospital in serious condition following the accident at 4:35 a.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of the BQE.

WNBC-TV says a box truck overturned near the Atlantic Avenue exit.

Traffic is being diverted at Fort Hamilton Parkway.

The eastbound lanes and two westbound lanes of the expressway are shut down.

WNBC says westbound traffic is backed up about six miles to 65th Street in Bay Ridge.

Westbound traffic at the scene of the accident and over the Brooklyn Bridge is moving slowing.

The cause of the accident wasn’t immediately known.
