GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say a Weld County jail inmate who died after he was taken to a hospital had told deputies he took a prescription drug before he got to the jail.

The Greeley Tribune reports (https://preview.tinyurl.com/mtk7572 ) 52-year-old Barton James Grubbs of Montrose died Friday.

The State Patrol arrested Grubbs Thursday on suspicion of driving under the influence and other traffic violations and took him to the jail.

Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Reams said Wednesday Grubbs told jail officials he had taken medicine. Deputies confiscated pills they found in Grubbs‘ pocket.

Reams says Grubbs was placed on suicide watch because of his answers to jail officers. A deputy became concerned because Grubbs didn’t look well, and he was taken to the hospital.

The sheriff’s department and the State Patrol are investigating.
