TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida House is scheduled to vote on a bill Monday that would make it illegal for insurance companies to deny policies or charge higher rates solely based on gun ownership.

The bill (HB 255) is sponsored by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Shalimar, and is the final stop before moving on to Governor Rick Scott. The accompanying bill (SB 424) passed the Senate 36-3 last month.

Some insurance companies would prefer not to insure gun owners and others have a different set of rates - saying there is a greater risk of claims. Supporters of the bill say it’s illegal to discriminate against a citizen who is exercising their constitutional right to own firearms.
