HANAHAN, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man is dead after a tree with roots weakened by heavy weekend rains fell on his house.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said 72-year-old William Carl Klein was sitting in the upstairs of his home Sunday in Hanahan when the tree fell shortly after midnight. The oak tree was about 2 feet in diameter.

Firefighters were able to pull Klein from under the tree but he died later at a hospital.

A woman who was in a separate room of the house escaped injury.
