Monroe Co. blaze claims lives of woman, son

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a Monroe County house fire has claimed the lives of an elderly woman and her son.

According to WATE-TV (https://bit.ly/1mrWhZf), three fire departments within the county were dispatched to the blaze in Madisonville around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Officials say 86-year-old Louise Turner and 51-year-old William Vincent Turner were killed in the blaze.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Pedestrian in wheelchair hit by van, killed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Police say a pedestrian who was struck by a van and killed while crossing an intersection in a northeast Nashville neighborhood failed to obey a traffic signal.

Officials said in a press release on Sunday that 57-year-old Michael Conner of Nashville was struck around 10 p.m. on Saturday by the van traveling north in Madison. Conner, who was in a wheelchair, died at the scene.

The driver of the van, 71-year-old Arthur Williams of Madison, and a witness, told police that the traffic signal at the intersection was green for northbound traffic.

Police say the contributing factor in the crash was Conner’s failure to obey a traffic control device.
