MONTICELLO, N.Y. (AP) - A 43-year-old man remains jailed after authorities say he tried to drown two police officers who had chased him into an upstate New York swamp after they found drugs on him.

Police in Monticello in Sullivan County tell the Times Herald-Record of Middletown (https://bit.ly/1jukqcm ) that officers pulled over a vehicle for a traffic violation Saturday morning and found crack cocaine on Anthony Shackelford of Monticello.

Shackelford bolted from the officers, who chased him into a swamp behind a housing complex. Officials say Shackelford struggled with the officers and tried to grab one of their handguns.

Authorities say he also tried to pull both officers under the waist-deep water before they subdued him.

The charges against Shackelford include assault and drug possession. He’s being held in the county jail.
