PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A retired Providence firefighter has filed a $7 million claim against the city for suspending his disability pension after he was seen lifting weights in a TV news report.

John Sauro filed the claim Friday saying he plans to sue the city. WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/PmpMwE ) the notice alleges the city’s suspension of Sauro’s pension in December was wrong and has caused him mental anguish, bodily injury, anxiety, ridicule, loss of enjoyment of life and other problems.

Providence Mayor Angel Taveras says Sauro’s claims are baseless.

Sauro retired in 2000 after suffering a shoulder injury he said he received on the job. WPRI-TV showed video of him lifting weights in 2011.

The city’s Retirement Board suspended his pension after officials say he refused to be examined by a specialist in Massachusetts.
