PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - A landmark will reopen on the St. Clair River in Port Huron this summer.
The Pilot House restaurant will reopen as Rixs’ on the Rocks in early June, co-owners Dave Rix and Jessica Gensiewski told the Times Herald of Port Huron (https://bwne.ws/1qjfY4w ).
“It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to own a restaurant, and for Jessica,” Rix said. “We’re going to be a locally owned, family-owned restaurant.”
The restaurant will focus on good food, good service and a great view of the St. Clair River.
“There’s really no place like it on the water,” Gensiewski said.
Rix and Gensiewski are remodeling the restaurant, replacing the outdated interior with a beach theme. Seating will be available both inside the restaurant and outside on a deck overlooking the river.
“I really want to cater to the outside in the summers,” Gensiewski said.
She also plans to have live entertainment on the weekends.
Food selections will include seafood, steak, pizza and Mexican. On Tuesday, Rix confirmed the restaurant would offer Bart’s Chicken Gizzards, a star attraction when the building was home to Bart’s Bar.
“I have a lot of unique recipes that I want to put on the menu that you don’t get at every restaurant,” Gensiewski said.
The location on the St. Clair River has gone by different names in years past, including Bart’s Bar, Riverside Grille and the Pilot House.
Gensiewski said she and Rix focus on customer service and their experience in the restaurant business should give Rixs’ on the Rocks staying power.
“I’ve been in the business and I’ve seen some fail and I’ve seen some succeed,” she said. “I have some experience in seeing how to make it work.”
Dave’s daughter, Alexa Rix, will work as a general manager. Alexa said the trio’s background in the restaurant industry will help to develop and maintain the restaurant.
“We have a lot of good ideas to put together,” Alexa said.
Gensiewski said the restaurant is hiring for all positions - servers, bartenders, hostesses, cooks, dishwashers, floor managers.
“I plan on being really busy so I want to make sure we have enough people,” she said.
Dave Rix said the restaurant is a family project and a dream shared by all those involved.
“Ever since I was 4 years old, I used to put on a little apron and wait on my mom,” Gensiewski said.
