BALTIMORE (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced a former Maryland correctional officer to 2 1/2 years in prison for his role in the beating of a state prison inmate at the medium-security Roxbury Correctional Institution near Hagerstown in 2008.

Michael Morgan was sentenced Wednesday in Baltimore. He is among 14 former officers convicted of federal offenses stemming from the assault and subsequent cover-up.

Two other former officers were convicted in state court.

Officers on three successive shifts beat inmate Kenneth Davis to punish him for punching a guard.

Morgan’s is among the stiffest sentences given to the 10 men sentenced so far in federal court. He pleaded guilty last year to depriving Davis of his civil rights by kicking him in the groin and giving false testimony during an administrative hearing.
