BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A North Dakota man accused of punching and strangling his girlfriend has pleaded guilty in federal court.

Christopher McMillan, of New Town, is charged with assault of a dating partner resulting in substantial bodily injury. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

The incident happened on the morning of Dec. 9. Authorities say McMillan and his girlfriend began drinking after she got her children ready for school. The assault happened about 11 a.m.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 28.
