CENTRALIA, Ill. (AP) - Work is underway to clear tons of waste illegally dumped at a closed mobile home park in southern Illinois.

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency announced on Thursday that it’s starting cleanup of 660 tons of debris dumped at Woodlawn Trailer Park in Centralia.

The mobile home park contained 50 homes, but has recently gone through bankruptcy. Clinton County now holds the deed to the property. County officials asked the agency to help remove the debris. The agency says they’ll clean up approximately 500 bags of trash, which pose an environmental hazard to residents.

Lisa Bonnet is the Illinois EPA director. She says the cleanup allows for future property development and protects the environment.

Agency officials say they’ve cleaned up 280 of these often long-festering dump sites since 2006.
