LEWES, Del. (AP) - Fire officials say a firefighter was hurt and a Lewes building that houses doctors’ offices was destroyed in a blaze.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office say the fire was reported about 3:45 p.m. Thursday at Mid Atlantic Family Practice. All those who were in the building escaped safely.

Investigators say a burning cigarette dropped into a disposal unit started the blaze, which spread to shrubs and then the building.

Firefighters from several companies responded and found part of the building engulfed in flames. John J. Williams Highway was shut down as smoke reduces visibility.

Officials say one firefighter was treated and released at a local hospital for a minor injury.

Damage is estimated at $1 million.
