BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say the officer who shot a man at the Bennington Police Department lobby is a nearly 15-year veteran of the department.

Patrol Sgt. Michael Plusch was night shift supervisor when two men came in Tuesday. One of them was making stabbing motions at the other and then threatened officers.

Police said 42-year-old Gregory Filo was shot by Plusch after ignoring verbal commands to drop a knife.

Plusch, who regularly works the night supervisory shift, is on paid administrative leave and police will review the incident.

Police say Filo was in critical, but stable condition Friday, and was still receiving treatment at the Albany Medical Center. He’s been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
