ISLAND PARK, N.Y. (AP) - The mother of former Sen. Alfonse D’Amato has died at age 99.

Family spokesman Gary Lewi said Antoinette D’Amato died Thursday night at her home in Island Park, N.Y.

Alfonse D’Amato credited his mother with getting him elected to the Senate in 1980.

Antoinette D’Amato appeared in a TV commercial carrying a bag of groceries and complaining about inflation. She told viewers to “vote for my son Al.”

The 76-year-old Republican served three terms in the Senate.

Alfonse D’Amato said on Twitter, “RIP Mama. You were the heart and soul of our family.”

Survivors also include another son, Armand D’Amato, and a daughter, Joanne D’Amato; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Armand D’Amato, died in 2010 at age 97.
